This is a short post.
We’ve had a guest this week who’s taken up lots of my time.
You may know about Comic Cons. There’s one in Waco this week. They started as comic book conventions, and quickly became comic book conventions on steroids. People come dressed as their favorite comic book (or movie) character. Famous (or sort of famous) actors come. One of the best known “cons” is the one in San Diego. Kevin went to that one a couple of times, and got to hear Ray Bradbury speak!
I don’t know if you’ve been to a comic book store lately, but lots and lots of comics published these days are, um, more lewd and/or violent than the Little Lulu “funny books” that I purchased as a child. Kevin’s been interested in comic books for years, and he and a friend decided that there’s a market for comics that are more family friendly. They created Team S.L.U.G.
They get booths at comic book conventions and sell the books, along with patches and grenades. They would love to make lots of money, but they enjoy the fun of it, too. They signed up for a booth for the Waco event, and, to their great delight, they got interviewed by Carl Hoover from the local paper. The article was in Thursday’s issue. With a photo! (But, too bad, the online version of the article doesn’t have Kevin’s and Shannon’s photo.)
Anyway, Peter’s been with us all week, and Peter and Mimi did lots of fun stuff all week, and Mimi is now too weary to write very much.
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8
I’ve been sleeping in the room where Peter’s crib is, so that he doesn’t have to wail loud and long in the middle of the night to rouse us if he wakes and needs something. Kevin and April have arrived and I’ve handed over the middle-of-the-night responsibilities. I’m looking forward to my own bed of peace and safety.
What amazing memories you are building with Peter. I am sure mom and dad enjoyed the break too.
Hoping Kevin and his friend’s venture is successful as well as fun. Peter will be forever blessed by the relationship with you and David. And, Kevin & April are more blessed than they probably know! Love , Suzy
The Comic Con was fun. They sold lots of stuff. I went Saturday afternoon, and it was *really* interesting! They were pretty worn out, after Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They left this morning (Monday), and Peter, who’d been with us since last Sunday afternoon, had been saying for a couple of days, “When are we going to *my* home?” But when they left, he said, “Bye, bye Mimi’s house. See you later!” So, we’re all looking forward to next time.
We tried to cram in as much as we could: three trips to Mayborn, four trips to libraries, four walks around the neighborhood, one lengthy trip to Mountainview Park, two trips to Target, etc. And, yes, Mom and Dad had some down time. Kevin said that Wednesday afternoon they had massages and went out to eat afterward. So, a great week for all of us.
I understand completely! How did we ever use to keep up with our kids?!! But I know you love every minute of your time with Peter. Love the picture of Peter – and your “mini-version” of ‘Green Eggs and Ham.’ 🙂
Kevin’s favorite Dr. Seuss book was *There’s a Wocket in My Pocket,* which is muuuuch shorter and less irritating than *Green Eggs and Ham.* And just as entertaining, I think. And, thanks.
I’m a couple of days behind in my Trib reading, so I’m on my way to find Kevin’s write-up right now! What fun! I remember your telling me about the original SLUG idea. And…what a lucky little boy Peter is to have an early childhood educator for a granny!
Well, I can do my part. But I also scour the land for places where *other* people have created great spaces for kids. And, when I wrote this, we hadn’t yet been to “Preschool Block Party” at the library, which happens every fourth Sunday afternoon. David ended up taking him, because by Sunday, I was so completely wiped out that I had to stay home all day. Peter was the youngest kid there, but they stayed for the entire hour and a half.
Did we potty at the Mayborn?
We opted for diapers at the Mayborn this visit, lest we leave another damp calling card there.
