You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby

Time flies. Where does the time go? If I could save time in a bottle

When Jeremy was a baby, Kevin and I used to sing a song to him that we learned from Sesame Street. Buffy St. Marie sang it to her little boy, Cody. It included the lines:

He’s a cute little fellow, he’s a honey bun.

He’s a-havin’ his dinner. He’s a-havin’ his fun.

He’s a cute little fellow, but he won’t be little for long.

Patty cake, patty cake, pans and lids; I turned my back, and look what you did.

You grew some more; you’re a whole new kid. You won’t be little for long.*

I have to tell you, we’ve got a whole new kid, too.

I was in Fort Worth for a couple of days last week, and then Peter came to Waco for a few more days. We did the usual things–he and David went to the Mayborn Museum on Thursday evening. We went to Story Hour Friday morning. Grandad and Peter filled up the bird feeder and also watched birds on the live feeds on Grandad’s computer. We went out to breakfast on Saturday morning and went to church on Sunday. Stories were read, songs were sung, cookies were baked, and, well, yes, a Bob the Builder video was watched.

Sunday was birthday celebration day.

 The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
    His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
    his mercies begin afresh each morning.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (New Living Translation)

My favorite mornings are the ones where Peter is in the next room. Sometimes I sigh to remember how I used to rock his tiny little self, all snuggled up in the crook of my arm. How I used to be able to put him on a blanket on the porch, and he would stay on it. How I used to be able to say, “Let’s go for a walk, Peter,” and put him in his stroller, and he never said, “No, Mimi, I don’t want to go that way. I want to go the other way.” Ah, now. He has strong opinions about what books to read before nap and bedtime. And what he wants to wear and what he wants for snack. And how many times he wants to watch the Bob the Builder video. (Sorry, dear. Only once per day.) How wonderful it is to watch him grow. How I thank God for him.

*I looked and looked for a Sesame Street video on YouTube of this song, but I cannot find it anywhere. If you’d like to know how it sounds, call me up and I’ll sing it for you.
