I’ve spent each evening this week at church, with the little kids (Pre-K’s and Kindergarteners). The first through sixth graders were having Music Camp, and we were having Fun with Friends. Literally. We did ART, and lots of it. Sunday was Collage Night. Monday was Drawing Night. Tuesday was Painting Night. Wednesday was Printing Night. And Thursday was Sculpture Night. As usual, there was Tall Painting. And I was sure you’d want to see photos.
Disney’s fairies, Fauna, Flora, and Merryweather. I get why Merryweather is clad in blue (sky–weather), but it seems like Flora should have on green (even though some flowers *are* pink), since she represents plant life, and Fauna should have on, maybe, brown? There’s not really one color that represents animal life. I don’t know; it just seems confusing for her to be wearing green.
When I was a third-grader, a new Disney movie came out. Sleeping Beauty. Back in those olden days, animated movies didn’t come out every few weeks, like they seem to now. Kids had to wait for those Disney movies. Sleeping Beauty featured, among other characters, three fairies. (I was going to say “magical fairies,” but it seems that, by definition, all fairies are magical.) The Disney fairies are Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. I thought those were just cute names, not having had enough science yet to know whatfloraand fauna meant. (Merryweather can refer to family surnames, musical groups, a fictional private security corporation from video game, and a Victorian firefighter’s helmet.)
I’ve been teaching preschoolers in Sunday School for many, many years. I enjoy it. It’s just more fun than going to Sunday School with adults. We laugh more. We move more. And the snacks are often better.
When I was a little pre-reading kid, my parents read aloud to me, and some of those picture books were Little Golden Books. The only one I really remember well (and it’s somewhat because they saved that book) was A Day at the Playground, which I apparently called “Donny Donaldson,” after the book’s main character. The book was illustrated, as many of the Little Golden Books were, by Eloise Wilkin. And there was a standard sort of neighborhood depicted in those books.
A couple of Wednesdays ago, I went back to West Avenue Elementary School to start Reading Club again. I have two of the girls from last year, but the third girl is going to a different school (say the other two girls). The school people said that I could choose the book for us to read this year, and showed me, in their library, all the books that they have “classroom sets” of. (In other words, multiple copies of the same book, so that students in an entire class can have their own copy to read.) I selected several books for the girls to choose from.
I really had lost track of the passing time; or I guess I was uncertain about it. Anyway, she arrived! And, doing what so many do when someone new shows up on the scene, I grabbed both my phone and my regular camera and rushed to get photos of her in her wonderful fresh newness.
The teen fashion department at Target is right in front of the door as I walk in. I enjoy seeing, at the change of seasons, what the new, trendy fashions and colors are. Some of the things I like; some of the things I don’t like at all. Some of the things wouldn’t have mattered how my teen-aged self felt about them; I would never ever have been allowed out of the house in them. I guess what goes around does come around, but some of it is coming around much shorter and skimpier than it used to be.
I used to accessorize more, back when I was a reader of Seventeen magazine. I had different kinds of necklaces and pins and bracelets, and I carefully chose my earrings each day. I had scarves and knew how to wear them, I guess.
These days, I admire other ladies’ necklaces and bracelets, and, really, does anybody go out without a cute/charming/toasty/colorful scarf these days? At least besides me?
I don’t remember when I stopped being accessorized. I guess it just became more trouble that I was willing to give. And thank goodness ladies aren’t expected to wear hats and gloves to church any more!
